Although I had been to Las Vegas many times over the years, this was the first time in 7 years since I had been back, and with a city such as Vegas a lot had changed. I stayed at Caesar's Palace, which is roughly in the centre of the main Strip.
The exchange rate was as low as its ever been, with the £ to $ trading at £1 = $1.20, so in reality I was getting $1.08 for every £ converted, almost like for like.
The slots appeared to be a lot tighter than in previous times I had visited, although I could have just been on a very bad run. I was having a losing streak on the run up to the Las Vegas trip, and I think I brought that across with me.
The slots make a lot of noise for very little wins, and many have progressive jackpots of $10+, allowing them to hit often and give the appearance of jackpot payouts. The multi-million dollar jackpots are so far out of reach, it's best to ignore those.
The slots in general played very bad, I was ahead on one of the slots out of the many I had played. Some were so poor I couldn't even upload the video; Sinfield for example had $300 without any kind of bonus, as did the Wizard of Oz.
The food in Vegas seems to be more costly than in previous visits, but that's also because of the low exchange rate. Buffets in Caesar's were $70, and even though I'm a VIP at the casino which allows me to jump the queues, the price is still pretty steep if you wanted to eat out every night. The other benefits of being a VIP at Caesar's include a VIP lounge with free private bar, a free buffet (although it is considerably smaller than the main buffet), free bar in the hotel room and other perks depending on your spend.
My total costs for the trip worked out as follows:
Hotel room + flight £750 (that price will vary considerably depending on the time of year you plan to visit).
Taxi to and from the airport, $30 each way (about a 20 minute drive).
Slots, $3000
Poker, $400 (low stakes $1/$2).
Additional costs also included petrol and parking at the airport. I was there during the Black Friday sales, so did manage to pick up a few bargains.
Would I go again? Certainly, but I would be more selective on the slots I played. The hotel was 10/10.
