Rupert Murdoch is now getting in on the sports betting game in the United States. His FOX Network launched a phone app called FOX Bet, in conjunction with the people from The Stars Group, which enables customers to place wagers in a sportsbook setting.
This is primarily designed for engagement with fans, using its well-known brand as a draw, and recreational bettors will be targeted. FOX has enlisted some of its on-air personalities to get involved, including Colin Cowherd, and there will be simple how-to videos explaining the various bets.
FOX Bet is already doing business in New Jersey, and is quickly expanding to Pennsylvania. It's quite unusual indeed that a major media company would get involved in taking action, especially as it is a TV rights-holder for the National Football League and Major League Baseball.
This is not the first go-around for Murdoch in the sports betting arena. When he owned Sky TV in Britain, Sky Bet was established as a wagering outlet. He had also leveraged one of his newspapers, The Sun, with Sun Bets, which was powered by Tabcorp Holdings of Australia, but that was shut down for lack of business last year.

It's the story that just won't go away, and now the plot thickens. The Washington Post has published an investigative report indicating that one of the companies involved in the recent awarding of the no-bid sports betting contract in the District of Columbia has no employees and in effect, no resources with which to carry out its stated purpose.
Veteran Services is a company that helped Greek-based Intralot - which operates the D.C. Lottery - meet its requirement to have a local firm perform the bulk of the subcontract, but as the Post probed them, it discovered that that company's headquarters were located in a home owned by the 75-year-old mother of an executive who is paid by Intralot. Barbara Bailey has not been very responsive to reporters, but records indicate that there is virtually no activity on the part of Veterans Services, but it is financed through Intralot, making it more or less a front. As such, it may not even qualify as a local business.
To make things even more bizarre, they have executives listed on their website who had very little to do with the company and no real idea why they were there.
The story is rather complicated, and in some ways, kind of ridiculous, but considering that the sports betting rights involve a $215 million contract, two D.C. Council members - Robert C. White and Elissa Silverman - have called for a government investigation into the company and the contract.
So this story is far from over.
