Well, in what was one of the biggest transactions in the history of casino gaming, Eldorado Resorts announced it was buying Caesars Entertainment for an estimated $17.3 billion. The deal makes the newly-merged company, which will go under the Caesars name, the largest casino operator in the United States.
Eldorado had actually approached Caesars last year about a purchase, but nothing came of it. Then activist investor Carl Icahn got into the picture. He has since gathered a sizable portion of Caesars stock, enough to put the squeeze on to get a sale done. And he'd done business with Eldorado in the past, selling Tropicana Entertainment to them last year.
Under the terms of the deal, Eldorado shareholders will own 51%, with Caesars shareholders owning 49%.
Incredibly, Eldorado has built itself from just a dozen gaming tables in its initial property in Reno. That was opened by Don Carano in 1973. Now Don's son, Gary, serves as chairman, and Gary's brother Glenn Carano, a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, is an Eldorado executive.
The Culinary Workers Union, which will have 25,000 employees under the banner of this combined company, is not touched by that success story. Instead, with some $500 milion in cost-savings announced for the first year, they wonder how much in the way of wages or even jobs will be cut.

Meanwhile, there's more possible scandal in the story of legalized sports betting and the D.C. Council in the nation's capital.
It has been revealed, through a report in the Washington Post, that the cousin of council member Kenyan McDuffie, who cast the deciding vote in giving Intralot the contract to manage the city's sports betting system, is listed as the chief executive of a company that stands to make $3 million over the next five years as a sub-contractor.
In documents submitted to the city by Intralot, Keith McDuffie's name was included as the CEO of Potomac Supply Company, which will provide commercial paper products pursuant to the project. It was further discovered that he has given that infomation to Intralot's intermediary himself.
When all this was uncovered, well, everybody RAN for cover. Okera Stewart says HE is the boss at Potomac; Keith McDuffie maintains that he has no interest, financially or otherwise, in the company, and Kenyan McDuffie, who had not been in favor of Intralot's proposal until just recently, insists that the no-bid process is in the public's best interest.
The Washington Post, in a piece published by the editorial board, expressed nothing in the way of shock at the shady way business is being conducted.
